Hamilton actor defends pence comments
RICHMOND man Nathan Hoey has responded to claims made against his controversial anti-austerity protest statement.
The actor, who has campaigned against austerity in recent months, has since defended the controversial speech after a report made public about one of his Facebook posts that has been condemned by those offended by his words.
In a statement posted on Facebook on Thursday morning, Mr Hoey said it was an "opportunity to speak out, to point out the hypocrisy of the people I have offended with these remarks and the hypocrisy of those in power who support austerity", but added it was "disrespectful" for those they had offended to "ignore my words".
He also said he was sorry it did not have more impact because "those in power want it to".
He said people were "reluctant" to speak out against his position on the issues, but had been in contact with the Herald Sun to express their "thoughts and sentiments on some issues".
"The people who I've offended have expressed similar dismay as well to me," he wrote on Facebook.
"I've had calls to my office in the last week and I'm trying to be as civil and courteous with each person as I can for each of them, so I can continue to defend these messages."
Mr Hoey's comments led to the Federal Government launching an independent inquiry into the issue, in which a senior minister was appointed to examine whether the actions could have been taken for political gain.
He also posted a message on social media, in which he acknowledged that he had been in contact with those people who had upset him, but added that they were not his political opponents.
The minister for Indigenous affairs, Peter Dutton, issued a statement later on Thursday afternoon in response to the comments, saying they had "cast a shadow on the work we are doing, and our relationship with the communities that we serve".
He said: "This matter came to light when I was contacted by a member of the public on behalf of the Department of Indigenous Affairs asking about how their comments in relation to my actions towards Indigenous Australians affected public confidence and confidence in my handling of this matter.
"This matter, like most, came to light in a meeting between a government minister, Minister for Human Services Pru Goward, some ministers and I.
"Over the course of this conversation we discussed whether or not we should respond in kind. The Minister for Indigenous Affairs referred me to the Federal Attorney-General's department, which informed me that if they could not assist me in any way, the matter would be dealt with by the Federal Court.
